Spiritual Wellness

This dimension is described as being connected to something greater than yourself and having a set of values, principles, morals, and beliefs that provide a sense of purpose and meaning to life, then using those principles to guide your actions.

“Health is a state of the body. Wellness is a state of being.”

~ J. Stanford

How to Improve Spiritual Health:

Finding meaning and purpose is a lifelong process that evolves. Along with the other dimensions of wellness, a person’s level of spiritual wellness often fluctuates throughout their life. It is natural to experience a variety of emotions along the path to spiritual wellness – both positive (hope, forgiveness, acceptance, joy) and negative (doubt, fear, disappointment, conflict).

Spiritual wellness has the power and capability to make our decisions and choices easier, ground us during periods of change and give us the resiliency to survive with inner peace in the face of adversity.

Here’s a few ways you can improve your spiritual health:

4. Adopt an Attitude of Gratitude

If meditation or yoga is not for you, gratitude is one habit everyone needs to adopt. When you are grateful, fear disappears and abundance appears. The first step is to examine the limiting beliefs that are holding you back. Instead of giving in to these negative thoughts, replace them with empowering ones. Make a list of everything you have to be grateful for. Reframe negative experiences and ask yourself, “What is the opportunity here?” Remember, spiritual wellness is a mindset, but it’s also a set of actions you can take every day.

5. Give Back

Giving back is one of the most powerful spiritual wellness activities. It reminds us of all the things we have to be grateful for, and it fulfills some of our deepest human needs, like significance and contribution. Whether you donate time, money or skills, giving back connects you to your community and to your purpose in ways nothing else can.

6. Practice Forgiveness

Practicing forgiveness and letting go of grudges is an essential part of our spiritual growth. When we hold on to grudges and resentments, it becomes like carrying a heavy burden that weighs us down. By choosing to let go of past hurts and grievances, we create space within ourselves to welcome love, compassion, and healing.

Forgiveness is not just about pardoning others, it is also about extending that same compassion to ourselves. Often, we are our harshest critics, holding onto self-blame for our own mistakes and shortcomings. But by practicing self-forgiveness, we can break free from self-punishment and learn to embrace our imperfections with kindness and understanding.

1. Connect with your Purpose

If you’re living life without a sense of purpose, you’re bound to feel unfulfilled, aimless, and even hopeless. Your purpose gives your life direction and meaning, connecting you to the knowledge that life isn’t about “me,” it’s about “we.” It’s about serving something greater than yourself. Discovering how to improve spiritual wellness involves deep self-reflection about your needs, values and beliefs, and what brings you the most joy.

2. Create Spiritual Habits

The first spiritual wellness activities that come to mind for many of us are probably meditation and yoga. They’ve become popular and they are proven to work, so if these activities appeal to you, make them a part of your daily routine. Spiritual habits can also include things like walking in nature, gardening, reading, journaling, creating art, listening to music, and more. Any activity that gives you an opportunity for self-reflection and makes you feel at peace is an opportunity to improve your spiritual wellness.

3. Practice Mindfulness

Mindfulness is the ability to notice, focus on and fully feel whatever is happening in the moment. When you are mindful, you are fully present in your life and make ethical decisions according to your values. To practice mindfulness, start paying attention to your emotions, your body and the way you interact with others. Get off your phone and get away from social media. Practice deep listening with your loved ones and make time for what matters most: your relationships.

7. Read Inspirational Quotes and Study Sacred Texts

Reading wisdom-filled inspirational words can uplift our spirits, ignite our inner fire, and provide us with profound insights. Quotes from enlightened beings such as Buddha, Gandhi, or Rumi inspire us to live with compassion and kindness, and remind us of the inherent goodness within ourselves and others.

Reading sacred texts from various religious traditions provides us with a wellspring of spiritual knowledge. Whether it’s the Bible, the Quran, the Bhagavad Gita, or the Tao Te Ching, these sacred texts offer profound teachings that can help us navigate life’s challenges, gain a greater understanding of universal truths, and find inner peace.
